The Novelty of Changing Seasons

Living in Minnesota my entire life, I’ve always experienced a climate where there are four distinct seasons. Yes, some longer than others (winter). Despite our cold winters, Minnesota and our largest cities are commonly recognized as the top places to live, or for having some of the most active and happy people and cities. Recently, I heard a leading expert on happiness speak about novelty and how the changing seasons in Minnesota actually contribute to happiness. You see, humans crave novelty. Though change is hard, we seek to have novel experiences. The changing seasons provide just that, especially when you consider the beauty of the first snowfall, the excitement of the budding flowers, and the calmness of the falling leaves. These experiences provide novelty in our day-to-day lives. As we tie this with the 12 Habits, we can begin to understand the importance to “Try Something New” as it brings new, enriching experiences to our lives.

As 12 for Health partners with 24alife, we have sought to provide new opportunities for others to learn more about the 12 Habits. In December, Dr. Kerry Olsen presented on the 12 Habits at a Health and Wellness Breakfast Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio. Attendees included representatives of the Slovenian Embassy and wellness expert Dr. Michael Roizen of Cleveland Clinic. Check out this one minute video for highlights.

If you’re seeking to Try Something New, we invite you to attend the next Health and Wellness Breakfast in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Dr. Kerry Olsen will be presenting once again. The date? The first day of spring, of course. Hope to see you March 20!

And if the first day of Spring doesn’t work for you to join us, contact us to arrange a presentation for your event or group. Learn more here.
